How can I work around my limited schedule at home to go back to work and school?

Dreams… asked:

I am a mother with big dreams but little guidance of help and support. I have two little girls by the ages of 3 and 5. I have been staying at home for the past 8 months and I feel that I want to go back to work and register for school courses next year. But the only problem is that, I have to make sure I work around my schedule at home. My husband works out of state, 2nd shift job, 7 pm to 7am, alternating Saturdays thru Tuesdays, and mandatory over time on Wednesdays or Thursdays. I can’t rely on him to help me watch my kids while I go to work or go back to school because he’ll sleeping throughout the day tired from work. I don’t have family here. I cant put my girls in daycare because it is way tOo expensive and I am not eligible for child care assistance. I have sOo much that I want to do with my life but I just have no one to watch my kids. Could anyone help me with any suggestions of what I can do, so that I could get my life back on track? I just don’t know what to do anymore.

I can kind of understand your frustration. I am in the same boat except luckily, my husband’s schedule is a bit more flexible. Try talking to a college admissions counselor. A lot of colleges have on site daycare that is not expensive and is tacked on to your tuition so that financial aid may help take care of it. Also, depending on what you are going into, you could take some online courses. Good luck!

i feel your pain , my husband works alternating 12 hour shifts, all day or all night, so i have to work around his schedule too, try online classes… ihave 2 kids, a 2 yr old and a 2 month old, i do all of my classes online and i only workwhen my husband is off, try a waitressing job too, usually restaurants are a good source of income and they almost always work with you…..if you have dreams…you ever heard of the saying “where there is a will there is a way!” its true…if you put your mind to it youll get it done, it may take longer, but youll get it eventually!

Find another mom and trade babysitting. That’s what I did – Mon/Wed, the kids went to her her house and I went to school, Tue/Thurs I got the kids and she went to work. Try to keep your classes consolidated. Check at the college to see if they have a day care / and if you can pay for your children care by working there.

Check out the YMCA – they have on-site child care, so you might be able to work and have the kids cared for…plus you’d get a discount on classes.

I know that 3 years seems like a long time, but in just 3 years both girls will be in school and you’ll have a little more flexibility.

    Hi there,

Firstly there should be some sort of help for child care that you could get even if its not the full amount. have you been to your school to see what courses they offer and what sort of time table they have for you. Where i am they can give you learning timetables to suit your needs. Perhaps night college or home study where you only need to attend one class a week for marking etc.

Have been having the same problems myself but start college this week and also have two kids aged 2 and 1. My hubby is also a full time student so i have to work around his time table and the kids. My timetable is one and a half days per week and there is a nursery on college grounds so the kids have been accepted there for those days.

Good luck hope you get the help you need

maybe you could study from home there are loads of distance learning courses and hold off till they are both at school then you wont have to worry about childcare for daytime hours i know you sound like you really need to NOW but it wouldnt kill you to wait another couple of years enjoy them while you can
